Great
Depression
This series was shot against the backdrop of the great depression in the wake of Covid-19. This circumstance seems an endless plight when all walks of life witness a surge of unemployment rare, along with business suspension or even cessation of stores and restaurants. So, I am committed to taking some photos to record what the cities and their people are facing in the lockdown time.
This series of photos all were taken in once-bustling streets. I have frequently employed the long exposure technique in my creation, showing the transition from static to dynamic state and trying to depict the stories that happened just when I was shooting. Where a scene had a complex environment, I hidden the trivial details of the background into shadow to get a balanced layout of the subject and its surroundings. Furthermore, I have realized that diverse light and shadow capture techniques lead to different visual effects and moods. The color arrangement of a photo is able to affect a viewer's psychological state. In other words, bright colors bring about pleasure while dark colors give rise to depression. Accordingly, I used low saturated cool colors almost in all the works to reflect our depressed mood from the lockdown.
This series was made in an attempt to justify the influence of a specific time and mood on photographers. When everyone around you is in a promising mood, photos seem full of optimism and joy; when the world looks cold or after we get to know the cold reality of the world, some feelings will sprout in one’s mind. Indeed, the transition will steer the way photographers observe the world.
